Are Thank You Notes Outdated?

Are thank you notes outdated?

We hear about people expressing frustration that their gifts often go unacknowledged. We did a deep dive and found that experts suggest this may be due to a lack of exposure to traditional etiquette practices. As a result, the custom of sending thank-you notes could potentially decline, which may negatively impact relationships and reduce expressions of appreciation. While not everyone neglects to write thank-you notes, experts agree that this form of communication remains valued, even in the digital age.

Last summer, my husband and I attended my cousin’s wedding reception, and about six weeks later, she sent my husband and I a beautiful thank-you note that I will always treasure.

Here’s why thank-you notes still hold significance:

Personal and Thoughtful: A handwritten note shows you took the time and effort to convey your gratitude personally, something a quick email or text cannot replicate.

Strengthening Relationships: Thank-you notes can bolster both personal and professional relationships by conveying appreciation and creating a positive impression.

Psychological Impact: Research suggests that expressing gratitude has a positive psychological effect on both the sender and receiver.

Sincere and Memorable: In an age of digital communication, a handwritten note stands out and can be more memorable.

Versatile Applications: Thank-you notes are appropriate for a wide range of situations, from receiving gifts to attending interviews.

Subtle Marketing: In a professional context, thank-you notes can discreetly keep your name fresh in the minds of clients and partners.

In summary:

Handwritten thank-you notes offer a unique and personal touch that can strengthen relationships and leave a lasting impression. They serve as a creative outlet to convey gratitude, demonstrate appreciation, and even function as subtle marketing tools – an important consideration in the professional world of etiquette.

On a personal note:  Gift giving is not inexpensive.  People take personal time off from work, travel, hotel ad transportation costs add up.  If I don’t at least get a thank you or some kind of acknowledgement, then I won’t have any desire to give that person a gift again.
